When to add music to Short FIlm

Hey, I know it obviously depends on the story, shot, mood, and whatnot, but is there some kind of philosophy or rule when it comes to adding music in dialogue scenes and when not to?

When the music can amplify what is being said or the mood that underlies the dialogue or when it would be unnatural not to use it I think. Also up to the sensibilities of the editor and the wishes of the director. If that is both you it can be a question of feeling it out, does it work, if not then why? Is it even asking for it? Does it feel like something is missing?

I think not using it can feel more sincere in a way.

The only real answer is that “it depends”
